Requirements For Health

Many people are attracted by the idea of "positive health", which means feeling "in tune" with our bodies, other people and the environment. The idea comes from Chinese and other Eastern health systems that promote mental and physical harmony. Increasingly, people are trying to follow a healthy lifestyle, as research has shown that we can each take steps to prevent ourselves from becoming ill, for example, by eating correctly, exercising and avoiding stress. But health is not only a personal responsibility. Governments are responsible for public health, by providing decent housing, safe water, a clean environment and medical care. They can run public education campaigns and pass laws to promote good health, and put high taxes on health-damaging items like alcohol, cigarettes and leaded petrol. Such measures cost money, but they make good sense. It is far less expensive to prevent people from becoming ill than it is to pay a doctor to treat them. Governments have a moral obligation to protect us. But too often public health comes second to the desires of industry, which is allowed to pollute water, air and food with harmful chemicals. Politicians often ignore the evidence that unemployment and poor living standards actually cause people to become sick. Unfortunately, in poor developing countries, good health is impossible for millions of people because of a serious shortage of the basic necessities like clean water, nutritious food, warm, dry housing and hygienic sanitation.

                                      THE  RIGHT DIET

We know that a good diet is important for good health. Many people are becoming vegetarians because this can be a healthier way to eat. Vegetarians have a 30 per cent lower cancer rate than meat eaters and a reduced risk of heart disease, kidney stones and more. In the UK, which has the most vegetarians of any European country, the Vegetarian Society and Animal Aid launched the Choice! campaign in 1988, to  persuade schools to offer healthy vegetarian school dinners. It is a microcosm of the medical news fresh articles science. They sent information and recipes to schools, and asked vegetarian students to act, too. In one Birmingham school, students wrote letters to the headmaster, asking for better vegetarian school dinners and more veggie snacks in the tuck shops.
